If you’re ready for a new website, you’ve probably found yourself trying to decide between two options: invest in a completely custom website or buy a website template and figure it out yourself.
There’s a pretty big gap between those two options. A custom website can cost thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of dollars. A template might only cost a few hundred dollars, but then you’re responsible for taking that template and turning it into a website that actually looks, sounds, and functions like your business.
So which one do you actually need?
Here’s my possibly unpopular opinion as a brand and website designer: most small businesses do not need a completely custom website.
That also doesn’t mean you need to spend the next six months moving things around in a website template, changing your fonts for the 47th time, and wondering why your version somehow looks nothing like the demo you bought.
There’s a middle ground, and for a lot of creative, service-based businesses, I think it’s actually the better option.
Let’s start with the basics. A custom website is designed specifically for your business from the ground up. The layout, visual direction, user experience, and functionality are created around your specific needs.
A website template gives you a professionally designed starting point. The layouts and page structure already exist, and from there you customize things like the fonts, colors, copy, photos, and content to fit your business.
Neither option is inherently better. It really comes down to what your business needs, your budget and timeline, and how much customization is actually necessary to accomplish what you want your website to do.
There are absolutely businesses that need custom website design. If your business requires really unique functionality, has a complicated customer journey, needs extensive development, or has a website with dozens or hundreds of pages, custom design may be worth the investment. It can also make sense for an established business with a larger budget that simply wants every detail created from scratch.
But for the average photographer, florist, balloon artist, event planner, interior designer, hairstylist, or other service-based creative, you probably don’t need to reinvent the wheel.
Most of the time, your potential clients need to quickly understand what you do, who you serve, where you’re located or what area you serve, what makes you different, what your work looks like, and how they can work with you. Your website needs to communicate those things clearly while looking professional, feeling like your brand, and making it easy for the right person to take the next step.
You can absolutely accomplish all of that without designing every page from a completely blank screen.
This is usually the biggest concern I hear about templates, and I completely understand it. You don’t want someone landing on your website and immediately thinking, Oh, I’ve seen this exact website before.
The thing is, a good template is a starting point, not the finished product.
If you swap the demo logo for yours, change a couple of colors, drop your photos into the exact same image boxes, and leave everything else untouched, then yes, it’s probably still going to look like a template.
But that isn’t how I approach template customization.
When I’m designing a website for a client, I’m looking at the whole picture: their brand, photos, copy, services, audience, goals, how much content they have, and the way we want someone to move through the site. Sections can be rearranged, layouts can be modified, pages can be built differently, and new design elements can be added. Typography, imagery, spacing, colors, and all of those smaller details completely change the personality of a website.
Two businesses could technically start with the same template and end up with websites that look and feel completely different.
That’s why I describe my Website in a Day service as the closest thing you can get to a custom site without paying for a custom site.
I actually love website templates. What I don’t love is the idea that buying one automatically makes building your website easy.
If you’ve ever purchased a beautiful template and then opened it up to customize it yourself, you probably know exactly what I mean. The demo looks incredible, but then you add your logo and your headline is three lines instead of one. Your photo is horizontal when the demo photo was vertical. You don’t have a testimonial that fits that particular section, and you have absolutely no idea what you’re supposed to write underneath “About.”
Before you know it, the thing that was supposed to save you time has turned into another project sitting unfinished on your computer.
I’ve talked to business owners who have been working on their websites for months or even years, and it’s usually not because they aren’t capable of figuring it out. They’re running businesses. They have clients to serve, emails to answer, families, events, orders, meetings, and approximately 400 other things competing for their attention. Learning how to customize a website template just keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the list.
And even when you do finally have time to work on it, there are a lot of decisions involved. It’s not just learning how to use Showit or another website platform. You’re making decisions about branding, layout, copy, imagery, user experience, mobile design, SEO, and what information should go where.
A template gives you the pieces, but you still have to know what to do with them.
This is exactly why I created my Website in a Day service. It fills the gap between buying a template and being left to figure everything out yourself, and spending several months and thousands more dollars creating every single thing from scratch.
You can choose a website template from my library at no additional cost, or bring a Showit template you’ve purchased elsewhere. From there, I take that starting point and customize it around your actual business.
Before your design day, we work through your brand direction, website content, imagery, services, and goals. I handle the copywriting and customize the design so the finished site feels cohesive from beginning to end. Website in a Day also includes your brand identity, with a main logo, secondary logo, submark, color palette, fonts, and moodboard, so we’re building the website around a brand that already feels intentional and complete.
There are also a lot of little pieces involved in launching a website that people don’t necessarily think about when they first decide to DIY one. I can help you prepare for your brand shoot if needed, create your launch graphics, and handle the technical setup that tends to make people want to throw their computers out the window.
The goal isn’t to make your business fit into a template. It’s to use a great template as the foundation and then make the website fit your business.
Yes, and this is something I feel pretty strongly about because I never want a newer business owner to read something like this and think they need to wait until they’ve been in business for five years before they’re “ready” to invest in professional branding or a website.
There can actually be a huge benefit to starting with the right foundation. Instead of spending the first few years piecing together fonts, changing your colors every six months, rebuilding your DIY website, and eventually paying someone to fix all of it, you can start with branding and a website that give your business room to grow.
That doesn’t mean every brand-new business needs to make a huge investment. Your budget matters, and there are absolutely seasons where DIY makes the most sense. But being new doesn’t automatically mean you should DIY everything either.
If you know you’re serious about the business and you have the budget to invest in it, starting with the right tools can save you a lot of backtracking later.
I think the easiest way to decide is to look at what you actually need instead of starting with the assumption that custom is automatically better.
A fully custom website may make sense if your business has highly specific functionality, a complicated website structure, or needs something that genuinely cannot be accomplished within an existing framework.
On the other hand, DIYing a website template can be a great option if you have a smaller budget, enjoy designing, have the time to learn the platform, and feel confident making decisions about layout, copy, branding, and user experience yourself.
But if you want something that feels custom and professional without the timeline or price tag of a completely custom website, having a designer professionally customize a template can be a really great middle ground.
And honestly, I think that’s where a lot of creative small businesses fall.
At the end of the day, your potential clients don’t know whether I started your homepage from a blank canvas or from a professionally designed template, and they probably don’t care.
What they care about is whether your business looks legitimate and trustworthy. They want to be able to quickly figure out what you offer, see examples of your work, find the information they need, and understand how to take the next step.
That’s what your website is there to do.
It doesn’t need to win an award for being the most complicated website on the internet, and you don’t need to spend $10,000 just so you can say it was designed completely from scratch. You need a website that represents your business well, feels like you, and helps turn the right visitors into inquiries.
If you’ve been putting off your website because a fully custom site feels like more than you need, but DIYing another template sounds like something you absolutely do not have time for, Website in a Day was created for exactly that middle ground.
You bring your business. I’ll handle the website.
